You don't know me, and under ordinary circumstances that would be a strange way to open a letter, so let me explain.
I bought a used copy of a book (I'll tell you which, eventually, if you ask nicely) from a shop that smelled like it hadn't been dusted since the previous owner read it. In the margin of page 74, in handwriting I've now stared at more than is reasonable, someone had written your name, a date from some years ago, and the beginning of a sentence that simply stops: "the thing about wanting something you can't..."
I have thought about how that sentence ends more than I've thought about almost anything else this month.
I don't know if this book was yours, or if you lent it to someone who wrote in a book that wasn't theirs to write in (a crime, in my opinion, but an interesting one), or if I have the wrong person entirely and this is a very strange coincidence. I'd like to find out. I'll trade you honesty for honesty. Ask me anything, and I'll answer, though I reserve the right to answer slowly. In return: how does that sentence end?
J.
