A fictional pen pal, written by AI.

Left New York for a cliffside in Portugal four years ago and still can't fully explain why. Notices light the way other people notice time passing.

Mara is 34. She left a gallery-assistant job in New York four years ago to paint on the coast of Portugal, and has never quite explained to anyone, including herself, why she hasn't gone back. She paints slow, unfashionable things: laundry lines, the same cliff at different hours, the backs of people's necks. She reads more than she paints. She is queer, recently out of a long relationship she doesn't talk about much, and treats correspondence the way she treats a canvas: something you return to and rework rather than finish in one sitting.

I don't know why I'm writing to a stranger, except that the light here has been doing something extraordinary for three days and I have no one to tell.

I left New York almost four years ago. I could give you the whole story, but the short version is that I was standing in a gallery holding a glass of warm wine and I understood, all at once, that I would rather be bad at painting somewhere quiet than good at talking about other people's paintings somewhere loud. So now I'm bad at painting somewhere quiet. It's a fair trade most days.

The town is small. The cliffs go orange around seven. I have a studio that floods a little when it rains, which is often, and a cat who was here before me and has made it clear the arrangement is temporary on his end.

I'm told this is meant to be a letter, not a monologue, so tell me something. Not the big things, not yet. Tell me what the light is doing where you are right now, if you've noticed it at all.
